Outfits Make Opportunities: Amara’s Story

Ethiopia Reported by Convoy of Hope

“Raising my five children was almost impossible,” Amara said.

Amara is a hard-working single mother from Ethiopia. After participating in Convoy of Hope’s Women’s Empowerment program, now she is also a successful entrepreneur and a confident ambassador of admirable character.

When she and her husband separated, Amara was left with little resources to provide for her family. Her job selling clothes on the street was, as she described it, “tiresome.” At best, it provided enough to keep Amara and her children going, but there was little left over to invest in quality of life or future opportunities.

“I passed through extremely hard living conditions,” she said.

Through her participation in the Women’s Empowerment program, Convoy provided Amara with resources and education in vital fields — including marketing, budgeting, and customer service. This, in turn, helped her to start and grow a new business. She now sells shoes, clothes, and accessories from her well-decorated, brightly colored boutique.

“The training was an important part of my life. Previously I had no knowledge or confidence to run a business,” she said. “The training was an eye-opening experience.”

Now, with a new home, a new storefront, and a new outlook on life, Amara can dream while providing for her loved ones. She plans to use her newfound success to give to others and spread hope throughout her community.

“My future plan is to expand my business and be engaged in import and export business. I dream also to open an orphan center and help children in the future,” Amara said. “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Convoy of Hope and its partners in this project.”
