A Celebration of Compassion — How the Tenderloin District Spent Super Bowl Weekend
The Super Bowl of 2026 meant excitement and celebration for countless fans across the United States. Many families and friends shared wonderful times of connection in their homes, gathered in their living rooms to experience the event together.
But in many other parts of the US, watching the game was not as much of a priority as was getting the necessary sustenance to make it through the week.
Many Americans face the struggles of food insecurity and homelessness every day. The gravity of their situation is hard to grasp fully, especially from a distance. But compassion is one way to begin bridging that gap.
In San Francisco this year, the Super Bowl weekend included another type of celebration—one that celebrated compassion and respect for people of all backgrounds, facing all hardships.
On that weekend, the Tenderloin district experienced an energetic and joyous block party organized by Youth with a Mission (YWAM). Convoy of Hope partnered with this global organization, as well as with Thess Bar, whose mission is to help those facing food insecurity in our nation. Groceries from Convoy of Hope were given out, along with nutrition bars from Thess, to all community members who participated together.
Most importantly, this event highlighted the intrinsic worth of those being served.
Jones Chan, the CEO of Thess Bar, stated this event’s mission clearly, which was “conveying through our smiles that ‘We see you. You matter. We care.’” Chan continued, “It was a true celebration of compassion: groceries given out, prayers shared, and people seen and acknowledged for their dignity and worth.”
No circumstances can take an individual’s worth away.
“It’s so special when we get to do events like this and reach a ton of our neighbors with desperately needed food,” said Kent McCormick, a leader at YWAM in the Tenderloin district. “This is an incredible event that’s only possible because you guys showed up.”
To those we serve and partner with, your support is invaluable.
“So just thank you,” McCormick said. “Thank you very much.”
