Texas Winter Weather Response

USA Reported by Convoy of Hope

February 27, 2021 | 8:30 a.m.

Record-breaking winter weather across the Midwest and into southern Texas caused massive impacts to the power grid, leaving much of Texas without potable water. The lack of power, coupled with record cold temperatures, caused pipes to burst in thousands of homes across the state.

Convoy of Hope is resourcing local churches that are leading the charge to bring help to their communities. Tractor-trailers full of water, food, blankets, lanterns, and cleaning supplies have been delivered or are in transit.

These supplies are being distributed to churches and cities across the state of Texas. Thanks to local church volunteers, thousands of people are having their needs met.

Convoy of Hope received the following message from one of our partners in Texas. Bracketed information was added for clarity.

“[We had an] amazing day in McKinney. We gave five and a half pallets out. [There was a] long line early on and then [it] steadied to periodic the remainder of the time. [We] provided for the Salvation Army Warming Station, a nursing home that hasn’t had water since Tuesday, and the apartment complex across the street that has many of its complexes without water. [We also] got the mayor out there as we were unloading the water. [This is a] great impact for the people of McKinney and a massive momentum for our people.”

What you need to know:

  • Convoy of Hope has been at the forefront of response efforts.
  • 88 loads of water and food have been delivered, are in transit, or are scheduled for delivery.
  • Water is being distributed in 40 cities in Texas, and four other affected states.
  • We’re helping as many people as we can by working through our extensive church network.
  • Our efforts have been acknowledged by organizations at a local and national level.
  • Overall need should start to decrease, but there could be residual effects in some areas.
  • As temperatures rebound, power has been restored to the grid, the need for clean drinking water in Texas is still in high demand.
