Community Event Kickstarts New School Year

Modesto California Community Event

Hundreds of families packed the gym at The Salvation Army Modesto Red Shield at a recent Community Event in Modesto, California. Guests of Honor received much-needed school supplies, backpacks, shoes, socks, haircuts, and groceries in preparation for the new school year.

“Doing things like this back-to-school event and blessing families … that’s just one way to bridge that relationship and to bring hope to others,” said volunteer Maria Arellano.

After children received haircuts and picked out shoes, school supplies, and backpacks, volunteers led families to the Kids Zone, which was full of carnival games, snow cones, and lunches. Simultaneously, parents received resources from local nonprofits and The National Breast Cancer Foundation.

“We were able to serve hundreds of women today,” said volunteer Linda Latta. Linda helped at the event by passing out gifts to women going through The National Breast Cancer Foundation area.

Additionally, during the event, each family received bags of groceries from Convoy of Hope and grocery vouchers from The Salvation Army Modesto Red Shield.

“The need is great in this area, as evidenced by the dozens of families who lined up early in the morning,” says Kirk Noonan, who leads Convoy of Hope’s Convoy Nation. “It was an incredible day thanks to the many local nonprofits, volunteers, and especially the staff at The Salvation Army.”
