Growing Goals: Bimala’s Thriving Field

Nepal Reported by Convoy of Hope

Bimala, a woman living in Nepal, works hard to provide for her family. She and her husband are farmers, and although they take care of their field, they have always had to worry about having enough to provide for their children. When they couldn’t harvest enough vegetables from the field, they had to purchase them from the market instead. This created some financial uncertainty, especially when Bimala’s husband had to have surgery.

“We were in darkness,” Bimala said. “We had to buy everything.”

But her situation changed when she connected with Convoy of Hope’s Women’s Empowerment and Agriculture programs.

Through Convoy’s training, Bimala learned many good agricultural practices, such as commercial tomato farming, garden preparation, organic manure preparation, and off-season vegetable farming.

“Support from Convoy of Hope has made a drastic change in my life,” Bimala said. “Before this organization came into our village, we used to buy vegetables from the market, and we didn’t have any knowledge about commercial farming. But now, not only are we able to have green vegetables in our meals, but we are able to sell in the market and earn a good amount of money. People trust us and we are able to save for the future.”

Now that Bimala harvests enough food to provide for her family, the trajectory of her life and her children’s lives has changed. She hopes that her children continue to have good health and success in their studies, and that others can learn from her story.

Bimala’s training and hard work make the future that she wants for her family seem possible.

“I am not able to express all the gratefulness I have towards Convoy of Hope,” Bimala said. “It’s been a blessing to us. Thank you.”
