2023 Disaster Responses: A Collective Effort

Reported by Convoy of Hope

Middle East Conflict

It is hard to overstate the uncertainty and devastation that civilians in Israel and Gaza are facing due to the armed conflict. Children, the elderly, and those with disabilities are especially vulnerable. Convoy is working hard to continue getting resources on the ground to help as many people as possible.

Kenya Flooding

Severe flooding in Kenya has washed away entire villages, destroying infrastructure, killing livestock, and displacing hundreds of thousands of people. Convoy of Hope is on the ground, distributing food kits and other relief supplies to families in need.

Sudan Conflict

In May, a crisis broke out in Sudan due to the escalating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has forced more than 5 million people to flee their homes.

Since the beginning of the conflict, Convoy of Hope has been responding to the needs of those who are displaced and vulnerable. Convoy has dedicated time, teams, and resources to finding ways to distribute vital supplies to people in places that are difficult to reach.

Turkey & Syria Earthquake

In February this year, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, followed by strong aftershocks. More than 59,000 people died, and millions of people lost their homes.

With the arrival of winter and below-freezing temperatures, families are struggling to find warm shelter and critical resources. Convoy of Hope has provided winterization kits, warm shoes, proper clothing, and blankets to thousands of people in need.

Maui Wildfires

Raging wildfires decimated entire communities in Maui, Hawaii, in early August. Convoy of Hope immediately responded with teams and resources to help provide relief for those left destitute by the fires. Families received food, water, hygiene supplies, sheltering supplies, and more.

Recently, Convoy held a special distribution event. Families received boxes of groceries, care kits, and — just in time for Christmas — a toy for every child.

The road to recovery in Maui is long, but Convoy of Hope is continuing to meet needs.

War in Ukraine

The prolonged crisis in Ukraine has brought a sense of uncertainty for the future. Many Ukrainians’ primary focus is to just survive day to day. Convoy of Hope continues its work to meet needs in Ukraine, an effort begun at the very outset of the conflict.

In preparation for the coming harsh winter conditions, Convoy has provided vital supplies such as generators, warm clothing and shoes, and tents.

As the need in Ukraine continues, so will Convoy of Hope’s response.
