The hum of Don Alfredo’s motorcycle fills the air as he rides to deliver milk across his city in Honduras like he’s done for the last 10 years. And as he buys and sells, whatever he makes that day will be going to support his daughter and grandchildren.
But milkman? This is just a side hustle. Alfredo’s true passion lies with his farm.
“I currently work full-time on my agriculture projects, which is what I’ve done my entire life. I focus on planting corn, beans, cassava, and other crops, because I truly enjoy what I do,” he said.
Like many farmers, Alfredo recently dealt with an unfortunate loss of crops. Regardless, that hasn’t stopped his work ethic. “Life often gets tough, and in agriculture, we often face losses, but I encourage people to keep fighting because life, whether we want it or not, goes on.”
As a member of Convoy of Hope’s Agriculture program, Alfredo and many others are taught how to care for their land. “I have learned many things, things I wouldn’t have known if it hadn’t been for the organization: field practices, techniques, and more.”
Not afraid of learning new tricks, Alfredo is determined to apply what he’s been taught. “As much as possible, we will put into practice each and every one of the techniques and practices taught by the Convoy of Hope team, in hopes of seeing better results in our crops, because I have already seen the results of what they have taught us.”
Farming is Alfredo’s livelihood, and despite the long days, it’s how he takes care of his family. “I ask the Lord to give me the willpower to keep working and provide a better quality of life for my family. What I know for sure is that every day, I have to keep fighting for them.”
People like you are why Alfredo can support his family. Convoy merely equips so opportunities like these can be seized.
