What do you do when depression overwhelms you? For more than three months, that was Martha’s reality. Martha, her husband, and their two children lived off the small income her husband provided from serving at the local church. Life was good — until the church closed down.
Following this difficult news, Martha wrestled with her mental health. “I struggled with depression and did very little. However, when things became overwhelming, I realized I needed to take action.”
Martha got a job as a janitor and, with the rest of her family, moved in with her in-laws. “We were facing significant struggles, and they kindly offered us their support. We are truly grateful for their assistance, and I hope we can repay them one day.”
Now a part of Convoy of Hope’s Women’s Empowerment program, Martha is learning how to support her family through her new business.
“With the money I received, I started a small business supplying homemade sauces to merchants,” she said. “I prepare traditional Ethiopian spice blends such as shiro, berbere, and beso, as well as various types of incense. I make these products at home, package them, and sell them to merchants. I hope that one day, I will have enough money to open my own shop.”
While benefiting from the program, Martha wants to use what she’s earning to bless her husband’s family as well. “I believe this opportunity is a way for God to help me give back to them.”
Martha wanted to provide for her family. Now she — and other women like her — can do just that, thanks to supporters like you. “Now I am very optimistic about the future,” Martha said. “I have faith to encourage my husband. I am providing for my family, and I am saving money to open my own shop.”
Hopeless situations don’t last forever, but hopeful solutions can.
