As our headquarters’ state, Missouri holds a special place in the heart of Convoy of Hope. The early history of our mission began in the Ozarks with local acts of compassion — through Community Events, block parties, and neighbors simply helping each other out. Serving our community is still at the root of everything Convoy of Hope does around the world. It was our past, before our global initiatives had ever formed — and it’s still our present.
As a key component of that heritage, we know that helping kids is fueling the future. Last year alone, Convoy of Hope’s U.S. Children’s Summer Feeding reached 18,500 children here in Missouri. And with summer coming up, kids are again out of school. We can’t let that mean they’re out of food, too.
U.S. Children’s Summer Feeding brings kitchen and pantry staples to local children and families in need. Items such as canned goods — including fruit and fully cooked chicken — cereal with shelf-stable milk, pasta and spaghetti sauce, and snack packs communicate care and encouragement while providing needed nutrition.
“Kids were surprised, and many asked why we were doing this,” one partner said. “We said, ‘Just to give you some good food!’” Another partner shared how excited the children got about one snack item in particular: “The Cheez-Its are a hit!”
When children’s basic needs are met, they can find more space for joy, connection, and excitement. As the feeding program has grown, many partners, including schools and churches, have reported back with a similar sentiment:
“The interactions this week were more personal.”
“So many families continue to tell us just how much this support is needed and appreciated.”
“Kids were all smiles.”
Summer feeding doesn’t just give the children something yummy to eat. It helps families at home feel less financial strain and stress. For some families, that includes grandparents who are stepping into new and unexpected roles. One partner explained how retirees are now raising their grandkids and are so thankful for this resource.
Hope is reaching people of all ages, from all kinds of families. In the Ozarks, this is sure to be a summer of impact and kindness.
