Convoy of Hope is in Myanmar, distributing relief supplies to people in need in the wake of a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the country on March 28. The quake killed more than 3,000 people, destroyed infrastructure, reverberated through neighboring countries, and left communities visibly and emotionally shaken.
Myanmar is one of the countries most vulnerable to natural disasters. Additionally, conflict and political crises impede efforts to relieve hunger and malnutrition. This is devastating to the nearly one in four children under the age of 5 who suffer from stunting. And the earthquake exacerbated these issues.
A local pastor told Convoy that he and others felt sad and hopeless in the days after the quake. Their church building sustained damage, and many congregation members lost their homes and jobs.
But there is still hope. On April 3, our relief operations leader and his team visited the pastor’s church, bringing essential supplies, bags of rice and other food, mosquito nets, blankets, and solar lights. They shared encouragement and spent time with people in need. After the visit, the pastor shared that the church felt seen, supported, and strengthened.
Distributions are ongoing, with local teams traveling into harder-to-reach areas to ensure people have meals, family food kits, medical supplies, and hygiene items. These efforts are bringing vital support to vulnerable families.

Convoy of Hope is distributing essential relief supplies in Myanmar, where a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck midday on March 28. The initial quake and subsequent magnitude 6.4 aftershock caused extensive damage to infrastructure and killed more than 3,100 people. Over 4,500 people are still missing. Many families are still waiting for news of their loved ones.
Daily basic essentials such as food, water, and shelter are a huge need. In fear of aftershocks, people are still sleeping outside. There is no electricity or water due to damaged infrastructure. Spread of diseases like cholera is an increasing concern.
Convoy of Hope is working with partners on the ground to distribute supplies to survivors. Distributions are taking place in the hard-hit cities of Mandalay and Myanmar’s capital city, Naypyidaw, as well as in smaller communities across the affected area. Tens of thousands of families are displaced.
Even before the earthquake, 15.2 million people in the region were already food-insecure — a third of the nation’s population. This disaster compounds an already significant humanitarian crisis.
