Hurricane Debby Response: Convoy Sending Relief as Needs Arise in Florida & the Southeast

USA Reported by Convoy of Hope

August 15, 2024 | 4:22 p.m.

As Hurricane Debby weakened to a tropical storm and moved into Georgia and the Carolinas, it dumped enough rain to overflow rivers and leave several communities grappling with historic flooding.

In Richmond Hill, Georgia, the Ogeechee River flooded several neighborhoods. Convoy of Hope delivered a load of essential relief supplies Monday afternoon.

Through distributions at New Life Church of God in Richmond Hill, people and families received water, food, hygiene kits, cleaning supplies, and more. The new school year just started last week, so amid the busyness of back-to-school, families are dealing with displacement and water damage. These supplies mean families have one less thing to worry about while floodwaters recede and they start recovering.

The clean water means families can stay hydrated in the Georgia late-summer heat. The cleaning supplies mean people have somewhere to start when they can return to their homes and assess damage. Hygiene kits and food and baby care kits mean people can stay healthy and retain a sense of normalcy.

Ryan Ogden, the pastor of New Life Church of God in Richmond Hill, said, β€œIt’s super cool to know that folks in Missouri care about what’s happening in Georgia. We really appreciate that compassion. It’s made a big impact on our community and really made people feel like somebody is looking out for us.”

Convoy of Hope is strategically headquartered in Springfield, Missouri, so we are able to respond quickly and efficiently whenever and wherever disaster strikes.

Potentially heavy rainfall and flooding remain Debby’s primary threats as the hurricane weakens to a tropical storm and moves into Georgia and the Carolinas. More than a foot of rain has already fallen in South Carolina.

But Convoy of Hope is prepared. More loads of supplies are en route to the impacted area so people and communities receive the help and support they need to get through the storm and get back on their feet.

Hurricane Debby made landfall this morning in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 1 hurricane, knocking out power for more than 284,000 people. The same region was slammed by Category 3 Hurricane Idalia last year.

Though Debby’s sustained 80 mph winds are dangerous, the biggest threat to Florida β€” as well as Georgia and South Carolina β€” is the expected flooding in the next couple of days.
