Soon after Cristina became pregnant with her son, she lost her job. She was devastated. She had no income to provide for her baby. Cristina joined Convoy of Hope’s Mothers’ Club in El Salvador and was trained in finance, marketing, and trade skills so she could run a business. She also received lessons in hygiene and nutrition. She makes jewelry and sells it at an outdoor market in the city. Her very first day, she sold everything she had. “I feel proud and happy,” she says. “You never know how far you can go when you give 100%.”

Kebnesh remembers when her children went hungry. “I went four days without food once, because I knew my children wouldn’t have any if I ate,” she says. She borrowed food from neighbors to feed her family. Now Kebnesh is in our Women’s Empowerment initiative in Ethiopia. She learned how to operate her own business selling injera — a type of Ethiopian flatbread — and how to save money. Her business is thriving, but more importantly, her children are thriving. “I feed them whatever they want,” she says with a wide smile. “And I feed other members of our family who would otherwise go without.”

She can afford Biniam’s school tuition and has money to feed him nourishing meals. Genet and Biniam now have a secure future.
