Flooding in Democratic Republic of the Congo

Convoy of Hope is on the ground distributing relief supplies to vulnerable people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) who have been affected by mass flooding. Convoy’s team served more than 1,000 orphaned children and 3,000 widows. At the distribution, people received water filters and bags of fortified rice to help sustain them.

Torrential rains that fell earlier this spring caused Lake Tanganyika to overflow, flooding rivers and resulting in major damage. Three communities — Kalehe, Uvira, and Fizi-Baraka — were heavily impacted by flooding and subsequent mudslides.

Flooding in Democratic Republic of the Congo

The flooding caused at least 400 deaths and mass damage to infrastructure. This has exacerbated an already desperate situation where 5.7 million people are displaced and 2.8 million children are malnourished.

This disaster is occuring at the same time the DRC is struggling with armed civil conflict and food insecurity in the north of the country. Millions of people have fled their homes in search of refuge. Convoy of Hope is responding to the massive humanitarian need it has caused, as well.
