Across Colorado, multiple summer wildfires have disrupted lives, consumed homes and businesses, and caused entire communities to evacuate, living with increased risks of flooding and unsafe air quality.

The Aspen Acres Fire is the state’s largest, burning over 96,000 acres of land and destroying at least 279 homes and buildings. It is the seventh-largest wildfire in Colorado history.

Combined with the state’s ongoing Ferris, Gold Mountain, Ouray Country, and Willow Fires — all blazing since the last week of June — more than 192,000 acres have burned.

According to the National Weather Service, when an area of land is severely impacted by flames, burn scars are left behind. These burn scars leave the soil water-repellent, which invites an increased risk of flooding for up to two years after a fire has ended.

Colorado families were under evacuation orders, flash flood watches, and air quality alerts as they left behind their homes, belongings, and the communities they knew.

Now, as they return to their homes — or what is left of them — they are faced with a difficult reality: Rebuilding their lives will be a long journey.

Convoy of Hope is distributing fire relief kits, including soot erasers, Tyvek suits, hand rakes, air purifiers, and cleaning supplies. These items help families clean up damaged homes and comb through the rubble of destroyed buildings.

When the fires stop burning, recovery will have just begun. Convoy of Hope is committed to supporting these communities for the long haul, equipping them for the days to come.
