Half of Hawaiian Community Participates in Convoy Event
The following is an excerpt from story about our recent community outreach in Molokai, Hawaii, by The Molokai News.
Almost half of Molokai’s estimated population of 7,200 people came out to Kaunakakai Ballfield Saturday evening to take part in Convoy of Hope Hawaii’s event.
Convoy of Hope Hawaii, a faith-based organization, called the event the “Day of Compassion.” Unlike anything that has come to Molokai before, this impressive organizational effort involved 563 volunteers, 12 churches (most of the churches on Molokai) and financial support from numerous individuals and companies.
As residents were funneled into the ball field volunteers handed out wristbands for specific services, tickets for groceries and information sheets. According to Convoy of Hope, this is what was distributed: 1,200 pairs of children’s shoes, 175 family portraits, 185 haircuts.
An estimated 2,546 guests came to receive free food and/or services. More than 5,000 bags of groceries were distributed. A total of 1,456 guests prayed and received encouragement. A free lunch of stew was also available. Guests also enjoyed musical entertainment, a “Kids Zone,” community services, health services and prayer.
