Disaster Preparation: How One Man Helped a Village Survive a Volcano

Guatemala Reported by

Disaster preparation has a direct impact on how communities survive and recover.

Jos, a local pastor, received training in 2019 from Convoy of Hope on how to respond in the aftermath of a disaster. Little did he know that this training would position him and his church to be on the frontlines of serving his community.

When the Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala erupted in 2021, the resulting lava flows ruined homes and decimated livelihoods. Residents had dealt with minor eruptions before, but nothing like this.

“Don’t withhold from people when it’s within your ability to do something. We’re doing something.”

When Convoy of Hope heard about #HurricaneIan developing, teams started to prepare. Now, with community members in #FortMyers, Convoy is delivering relief.
