It’s hurricane season, and disaster preparedness is vital for millions of people living near the coasts. With proper preparation, you can provide peace of mind and an extra measure of protection for you and your household.

Make a Plan

One of the most important things you can do before severe weather strikes is to think through a plan of action. Make sure your plan includes a way to access food, water, heat, light, and power. Keep in mind that stores and other resources may not be available for days or even weeks.

Create a Preparedness Kit

The Family Preparedness Kit takes the basics of survival, as well as other commonly recommended items for an emergency supply kit, and breaks them down into five phases. You can add each section to your kit individually over time or create your kit all at once. It’s not a matter of how quickly you complete your kit, only that you do.

Know the Dangers

Each disaster brings a unique set of challenges and risks. Recent studies show that the majority of storm-related deaths are indirect. Knowing where danger can come from following a disaster is essential to protecting you and your household. Tips on evaluating potential dangers are outlined in the Family Preparedness Guide.

Stay Educated & Aware of Surroundings

Explore the possibility of first aid, CPR, and other disaster preparedness courses. Keep up to date on weather monitoring apps like Emergency Red Cross and NOAA Weather Radar. Explore additional resources at ready.gov.

Pack a Kit

In disaster zones and low-income communities, Convoy of Hope delivers the kits you pack to thousands of people in need every year. Whether it’s one, five, or 500 kits, Convoy of Hope takes great care to deliver each kit that you pack to people in need.

Pack these essentials to ensure that you can survive the first hours and days after a disaster.
Phase 4 — Clean Air, First Aid & Personal Hygiene
These items will help you care for yourself and your family after a disaster.
