Convoy of Hope Responds to Water Crisis in Puerto Rico

SPRINGFIELD, MO (August 10, 2026) — Convoy of Hope is responding to a deepening water crisis in Puerto Rico, where hundreds of thousands of people are facing prolonged water shutoffs amid severe drought and extreme heat.

Puerto Rico experienced its driest July on record. The capital city of San Juan is recording its driest July in more than 120 years. Nearly 70% of the island is experiencing drought conditions, leaving communities facing increasing uncertainty about access to one of life’s most basic necessities: clean water.

To conserve the limited water supply, authorities have implemented an organized rationing plan in San Juan and surrounding municipalities. Many families are going without tap water for up to 48 hours at a time as water service is shut off in one area and restored in another.

Many residents are now struggling with the daily challenges caused by the ongoing crisis, unsure when reliable access to water will return. Puerto Rico’s main reservoir, Lago Carraízo, is also nearing critically low levels as the drought continues.

In response, Convoy of Hope is sending bottled water from its Regional Distribution Center East in Atlanta to Puerto Rico to help alleviate the burden on families during this critical time.
