As Nepal Flood Death Toll Tops 1,000, Convoy of Hope Brings Relief

Catastrophic flooding leaves hundreds dead and thousands missing, including foreign tourists and Americans

SPRINGFIELD, MO (September 1, 2026) — Convoy of Hope is currently working to deliver relief supplies to survivors in Nepal. As they do, rescue teams continue to search through mud, rocks and debris after catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-China border killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands missing.

Nepal’s disaster agency reports 1,003 confirmed deaths and 3,916 people missing, including 583 foreign nationals. More than 1.6 million people have been affected.  

At least 41 bridges have been washed away. The destruction has left remote communities difficult to reach. Roads are covered in thick mud, and more than 14,000 people in the hardest-hit areas are completely isolated after roads, electricity and communication services were disrupted.

The flooding was triggered by a glacial collapse in the Himalayas, which sent rock, mud, ice and meltwater into the valleys below. The resulting surge traveled downstream along the Bhote Koshi River, catching communities off guard and turning a natural hazard into a catastrophic disaster.

At least 11,814 people have been rescued, but search-and-rescue teams continue working to reach isolated communities and locate those still missing. Authorities are working to identify victims whose remains have been recovered. Each unidentified victim is being documented and given a unique reference number, helping families identify and ultimately reclaim the remains of their loved ones.
