Students at Ozark Elementary decided to raise money for Convoy of Hope and other charities to benefit relief efforts in Ukraine. In the end, this fundraiser provided much-needed supplies like food, water, sheltering supplies, and hygiene kits to Ukrainians across Europe.

“I liked learning about how different charities could help different people and different things in different ways,” said third grader Kylie Martin. “It was fun doing, and charities do make a difference.”

The students worked in teams of three or four to research local charities and decide which ones would be most responsible with their money. After making persuasive presentations to their classmates, they voted on the charities they wanted to support and got to work — painting chairs!

They called it their “chair-ity” fundraiser.

“I applied for a $500 grant from the Missouri Retired Teachers Foundation,” said teacher Junee Townsend. “… And I won! We had 25 chairs donated to us. We purchased painting supplies from Lowe’s, who gave us a substantial discount. My son, who has a painting business, primed the chairs. He sprayed them with a clear coat when they were finished. They look so good!”

After showcasing the students’ creativity to the school and community, they held a silent auction and raised more than $3,000. Students divided the money between four charities, including Convoy of Hope.

“This project was simply amazing, and we loved watching the chairs become something the children were so proud to be a part of,” said Junee. “When the recipients came to receive their checks, like Convoy did, it just became so real to them. They loved hearing how the money will be used and that they have a part in helping others.”

The “chair-ity” fundraiser was a hands-on way to learn about generosity and help with relief efforts in Ukraine. To support Convoy of Hope’s response to the war in Ukraine, click here. To learn more about the response, visit convoy.org/ukraine.
